Quantum Chess is a four-player chess variant designed to simulate evolving battlefield dynamics. It transitions through seven unique phases—ranging from restricted duels to sudden death—ensuring no stalling, no draws, and a definitive winner.
Players must balance tactical aggression, strategic positioning, and adaptive gameplay as the board shrinks and rules evolve.
Objective

Phase-Based Structure
3
Phase 1: Duel Battles (Rounds 1 to 5)
Board: Full 12×12 active
Capture Rules:
- North ↔ South only
- East ↔ West only
- No cross-pair interference
Movement Rules:
- Standard chess rules
- North/South pawns move vertically
- East/West pawns move horizontally
Note: Early game is a pure 1v1 duel on both axes. Observe and adapt without being flanked.
Phase 2: Limited Interference (Rounds 6 to 14)
Board: Full 12×12 remains active
Capture Rules:
- Any pawn can be captured
- Only non-pawn pieces of your duel opponent can be captured
Movement Rules:
- Same as Phase 1
Note: Pawns are now vulnerable from all sides—use them to bait or provoke indirect threats.
Phase 3: Free for All (Rounds 15 to 27)
Board Collapse Begins (Round 15):
- Only central 8×8 board remains active
- Corner zones and strips become inactive
Capture Rules:
- Any piece from any opponent can be captured
Special Rules:
- All non-King pieces (including the pieces which have reached any of the ranks of the opponents) in inactive zones are eliminated immediately at Round 15
- Kings in inactive zones must exit to the 8×8 zone by Round 17, or be eliminated
- Pawns may enter inactive zones only for promotion (e.g., entering a strip/corner to promote is allowed if legal and intentional)
Note: This is the first purge—be ready to reposition Kings and sacrifice stranded pieces.
Phase 4: End Game – Forced Pawn Promotions (Rounds 28 to 40)
Board: Central 8×8 only
Capture Rules:
- No change
Special Rules:
- All pawns automatically promote even without reaching the final rank
- Promotion is restricted to previously captured pieces (i.e., own’s pieces which are captured)
- Queen promotion is allowed only on reaching the final rank of the opposing player
Clarification Example:
- If Red reaches Blue's final rank, then Queen promotion is available even if Queen is not captured. However, any pawns, which have not yet reached the final rank get automatically promoted to Red’s captured pieces. For example, if Red has lost a Knight and Rook, they can promote to either.
Note: Strategic captures early on influence available promotions now.
Phase 5: Sudden Death Mode (Rounds 41 to 50)
Board Shrinks to 6×6 Central Zone (Round 41)
- All pieces outside this zone are eliminated immediately
Special Rules:
- Kings outside the 6×6 must enter by Round 43 or be eliminated
Note: This creates a brutal bottleneck. Tactical sacrifices and fast centralization are key.
Phase 6: Point-Based Victory (Round 51)
Victory Determination (if no checkmate by Round 51):
- King: 10 points
- Queen: 9 points
- Rook: 5 points
- Bishop: 3.5 points
- Knight: 3 points
- Pawn: 1 point
Highest scorer is declared the winner.
Tiebreaker Clause: If two or more players tie on points, proceed to Phase 7.
Phase 7: Sudden Death Overtime (Rounds 52 to 60)
Trigger: Activated only in the case of tied scores in Phase 6
Victory Condition:
- First player to deliver checkmate wins
- If no checkmate by Round 60, the game is a draw
Note: Fast, sharp play is rewarded. Material imbalance won’t matter now—go for the kill.
Universal Rules (Apply Throughout)
4
Check and Checkmate

- Upon checkmate, the player is eliminated

- Must exit within 2 rounds or be eliminated

Turn Order
- Always Clockwise: North → East → South → West
